My Work

About Me

I'm Rees, a software developer based in the UK. My main focus has traditionally been on web development, I am highly experienced with both client side and server side Javascript as well as general web APIs. That being said, I have always been open to exploring other technologies to gain a broader skill set.

Recently, I have shifted my focus towards lower level development, in an attempt to move towards more performant software solutions. This has included working with languages such as Rust and Go, which I have found to also push me towards more robust architectures and better code quality with the larger set of constraints that are imposed.

Outside of coding, I am a passionate fan of motorsports, both as a spectator having watched F1 since the end of the 2020 season as well as participating through sim racing in which I mostly race GT3 through Assetto Corsa Competizione. I have also competed for the University of Portsmouth in the NSE and NUEL Counter Strike Global Offensive leagues, having even captained the second team for a stint in 2022/2023.

Education

College - Information Technology Level 32019-2021

Grade Achieved: Distinction * Distinction * Distinction

Had to produce a high quantity of reports and documentation as a part of assessments, requiring a high degree of organisation and self-motivation especially in the 2020/21 academic year in which there were many issues with teaching staff in order to still learn the required materials to succeed.

University - BSc (Hons) Software Engineering 2021-Present

Currently Studying, Achieved 81.2% Overall in First Year

Worked as a part of several groups in different courseworks, making sure to organise group meetings and meet deadlines. Some included a final presentation in front of both classmates and lecturers, requiring to communicate the information in a presentation format rather than a report and being prepared to respond to questions/ feedback.

Work Experience

Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd - Student Software Engineer 2023-Present

Initially began working on a project to develop a python application to interact with testing hardware. This included designing a multi-layered architecture to allow for the underlying communications to be reused in other projects such as automated testing.

Then became involved with the software architecture for a new product, involving a much deeper understanding of lower level embedded systems and electronics, working with different teams to ensure the different layers of the architecture matched the design requirements.

Bath University Digital Content & Marketing - 2 Week Work Experience 2020

Developed and deployed Ruby back-end code for URL shortening service. Worked as a part of a team, using Git version management and the Scrum Agile development methodology, participating in sprint meetings to contribute ideas and distribute stories between developers.
